I was this film at the cinema today.
It really was very good. One would
expect such with this cast. Judy
Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy,
plus Ronald Pickup, the latter being
one of those good actors whose name
I could not remember, but is so
recognisable.
It is a marvellous film about a group
of English people of about retiring age,
going to live in a hotel in India. The young
Indian manager of the hotel also played an
excellent part. Reviewers call it a "feelgood"
movie, and they are right. Perhaps most
suited for people of my age. I am sure the
average age of patrons today must have been
about 60.
I find English actors and actresses in particular to
be so good. I enjoy in particular seeing
the same people in various films and particularly
television shows. Give me English television
any day.
In literature I am a little divided. Mostly in poetry
and novels, I tend to prefer American writers, though
the English are also very good. Particularly twentieth
century, female mystery writers.
But of my own list of favourite books, Americans do seem
to be on top.
